Sustainable Aviation Fuels – SAF

To get an overview about SAF and what it means for aviation and the life cycle greenhouse gas emissions, the US department of Energy offers information for intense understanding and to monitor the efforts done and the efforts ahead.

SAF Jet-A types are coming to the market. Although the hydrocarbons are fairly similar, the difference between classic Jet-A from fossil sources and SAF types is in it’s origin. Fossil or grown cycle economy.

The RED A03 Jet-A engine is operated by our own ECU/FADEC and can be adjusted to local SAF types for maximum fuel efficiency.

Hybrid systems in aviation

HYBRID in aviation is the combination of conventional engines and electric drive systems.

If the conventional side is SAF capable, the result is a “net-zero” solution optimised for the mission profile.

The key to sucess is the software combining the control abilities of the conventional side with the requirements of the electric drive and the battery management.

The electric side of the concept provides the extrapower required for take-off. Three ground infrastructure scenarios are dominating the options:

  1. There is no charging infrastructure on the target airport. In this scenario the batteries are recharged during cruise flight and the hybrid aircraft may take-off from the airport combining electric and conventional power. This also is the solution for fast turn-around missions.
  2. There is limited charging infrastructure on the target airport or the mission requires extra energy. The inflight charging may be reduced and the batteries are charged on the ground. 
  3. The target airport offers perfect charging infrastructure. The hybrid aircraft is landing with the batteries discharged. Ground infrastructure allows charging until the hybrid aircraft is ready to go again. This is the maximum payload and airspeed mission.

Ampaired had the maiden flight with the RED A03 powered ECO-Caravan

Ampaire Cessna Eco-Caravan successfully completed the hybrid Jet-A/Electric maiden flight usind the RED A03 Jet-A engine.

Los Angeles (Nov 18th, 2922) A Cessna Grand Caravan took off from Camarillo airport, north-east of Los Angeles in a pure hybrid installation using the Ampaire electric motor and battery in combination with the RED A03 V12 Jet-A compression ignition engine Made & Developed in Germany.

Ampaire is developing hybrid-electric propulsion system for its Eco Caravan aircraft, an upgrade to the current Cessna Grand Caravan. Ampaire uses the RED Aircraft AO3 series compression ignition engine rated to 550 hp (405 kW) in an integrated parallel configuration. The RED engine provides the base power, Ampaires electrical system supplies peak power, the battery and charging system.

Using existing aircraft, the efficient energy management and the RED A03 compression ignited engine on SAF, commercial aviation turns into a “net-zero” scenario.

The new propulsion system for the Eco Caravan offers substantial benefits to users and will be the first in a series of electrified fixed-wing aircraft that reduce aviation’s carbon footprint. The first prototype and proof of concept had it’s maidenflight today.

·         Fuel consumption is reduced by 70 percent on shorter trips and 50 percent on longer ones with greater corresponding reductions in CO2 emissions due to the contribution of the electric motor and the optimized use of the RED engine.

·         The RED engine provides high thermodynamic efficiency that is 2X better than a comparable turboprop engine.

·         The RED engine is JET A/SAF compatible. With SAF usage, CO2 emissions have the potential for net zero.

·         Engine initial cost and ongoing maintenance are substantially lower than for a turboprop engine.

·         Eco Caravan operating cost is 25-40 percent lower depending on an operator’s route structure.

Ampaire is working with the FAA to achieve supplemental type certificate (STC) approval by 2024 and this maidenflight confirms the ambitious plan of milestones to reach that target. An impressive number of Grand Caravan operators already signed conversion contracts, trusting in the technical concept and the ability to reach targets in time.

The Eco Caravan will retain the payload capabilities of the Grand Caravan, carrying up to 11 passengers or 2,500 pounds of cargo. Range improves to 1,100 nautical miles.

A03-20x Series High Altitude

The RED A03-200 series is a derivative of the proven RED A03-003 engine model, developed for very high-altitude operation. This variant can be combined with the 500 and 550 hp power versions.

The 200-Series is equiped with the NORMAL category gearbox as the complexity of the aerobatic oil distribution is rather uncommon in high altitudes.

A03 type design is certified in compliance to EASA CS-E / TYPE-CERTIFICATE-DATA-SHEET No.: E.150.

A03-102 Series Aerobatic

The 100 series engine model is designed for advanced trainer and aerobatic aircrafts. The engine is approved for high positive-& negative g-load factors, high angular rotation velocities and inverted flight.

This gearbox variant can be combined with the 500 and 550 hp power versions as well as high altitude mission layouts.

A seperate oil reservoire suitable for the designed mission profile and connecting pipes need to be considered in the design process.

A03 type design is certified in compliance to EASA CS-E / TYPE-CERTIFICATE-DATA-SHEET No.: E.150.

A03-00X Series Normal cat

The A03 with the standard gearbox for NORMAL category aircraft, commuters and agricultural aircraft. The core design feature is regular operation, non-inverted, regular g-load considerations. This gearbox variant can be combined with the 500 and 550 hp power versions as well as high altitude mission layouts.

As the gearbox is integrating the oil management, this installation is needs less installation consideration and less 3rd party system integration.

A03 type design is certified in compliance to EASA CS-E / TYPE-CERTIFICATE-DATA-SHEET No.: E.150.
